HIGHLIGHTS OF SPEECH OF PROF. M.S. SWAMINATHAN IN HIS INAUGURAL SPEECH AT NINTH NUTRA INDIA SUMMIT CONFERENCE N EXPO
Thursday, March 13, 2014 08:00 IST
The ninth Nutra India Summit conference and expo, which kicked off at The Lalit Ashok, Bengaluru on March 12, 2014, reiterated the need for micronutrient and protein management in to prevent diseases.
The event, which will conclude on March 14, was inaugurated by Prof M S Swaminathan, founder chairman and chief mentor, and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) chair in ecotechnology.
The inaugural event highlighted that India was an emerging hub for domestic and international manufactures of nutraceuticals, health and food products.
With the increased need for and awareness about nutraceutical products, India is expected to be the largest market for fast-moving health goods (FMHG) in the near future.
In his address, Prof. Swaminathan said that ‘New Sutra for Nutra’ was an apt theme for this year's nutra event.
“Zero hunger is a key challenge that we face. There are nearly 200 districts in India that have been identified as hunger districts in India,” he added.
“We need 100 per cent access for food to all, increase in smallholder and productivity and zero loss or waste of food. Hunger can be eliminated in our life time,” Prof Swaminathan stated.
“The South Asian enigma is that 39 per cent of the kids suffer stunted growth and low birth weight. One in four kids die due to hunger and malnutrition. In fact, undernourishment reduces the nation’s economic advance by eight per cent,” he added.
“Between 1970 and 1985, there were vast famines worldwide, and scientists predicted that within 2030, a large population of the world would die of hunger rather than war, plague, etc,” Prof Swaminathan said.
“We saw a Green Revolution earlier. Wheat production was the highest between 1964 and 1968. Incidentally, India has been developing wheat varieties since the past 4,000 years. In the recent past, 2013 proved to be a significant year in India for the struggle against hunger with the Nutrition Food Security Act, conferring the legal right to food through Parliament,” he added.
“There are three major dimensions of hunger - calorie deprivation, protein deficiency and micronutrient deficiency, but there are other food and non-food factors. Some of the challenges of the National Food Security Bill is how to provide food and nutrition to all, how to enlarge the bread basket, and how to enrich crops.” he added.
Some of the challenges ahead, he said were loss of food, climatic changes, shrinkage of per capital land, shortages of water resources, expansion of biotic and abiotic stresses, market volatility, sea-water farming and making the youth take part in farming.
“Some of the foods that we come across every day have plenty of nutritional value. We need to ensure that the message is passed on to the public. For example, Moringa (drumstick) has 25 per cent iron, 17 per cent calcium, 15 per cent potassium and 15 times more vitamins than carrot,” Prof Swaminathan said.
“Similarly, sweet potato (orange), high-iron pearl millet and golden rice are rich in vitamins. We need to form a community of hunger fighters. The main goals of this community are to ensure that there is no wastage of food or loss of food, a better food consumption system, improved health literacy and nutritional literacy,” he added
I am happy to inform you that my students where I teach food science and technology pursuing my passion for teaching,, on my advices & guidance same said students have presented a poster session event on a theme "Are Food Systems Our First Preventive Medicine ?" on 11th Jan 2014 at 10.30 an
